Hanging it around the neck relieves anger and fury and is beneficial for heart palpitations. Agate is a well-shaped and famous gemstone. Some scholars are of the opinion that agate is not strictly a mineral, because the term mineral applies to substances whose parts, when analyzed through the science of chemistry, share the exact elemental nature of that specific substance. Agate does not possess this trait. This gemstone is a collection of several minerals of the silica and quartz families that differ from one another in appearance, style, and structure. When two or more of these minerals combine to form a lump and develop spots and layers, they are called agate. These minerals are gemstones in their own right, and their names are: chalcedony, rudraksha, onyx (sang-e-sulaimani), jasper (sang-e-yashab), opal, amethyst, star stone, bloodstone (hajar-e-dam), moss agate (sang-e-mocha), and beekite. Agate is called agate in English. Based on its various colors and styles, agate has several types: (1) Riband Agate (Silken ribbon-like agate), which contains layers of different colors that intersect one another. (2) Onyx Agate (Sang-e-Sulaimani agate), in which the colors of the layers are vivid and parallel to the surface. (3) Banded Agate (Yellowish agate), which features various stripes. (4) Circular Agate, which contains these stripes arranged in circles. (5) Eye Agate, which has dot-like eye formations at the center of the stripes. (6) Rainbow Agate, whose stripes form an arch shape and display prismatic colors when held against the sunlight. This quality increases the thinner the stone is. In addition to these, several other scholars mention the following types: (1) Ribbon Agate (silken tuft-like agate), in which jasper and chalcedony layers appear in parallel rows. It comes from Siberia and Sicily. (2) Brecciated Agate, which is actually amethyst combined with fragments of ribbon agate. It comes from Saxony. (3) Fortification Agate, which is found in various shapes. When cut, its parallel lines resemble the layout of a building. It displays fragments of beekite and amethyst. (4) Moss Agate (vegetant agate), which consists of chalcedony with red jasper stripes. Its appearance gives it a botanical origin. It contains mixed iron oxide, and some contain petroleum. Its surface is rubbed against a stone and polished with soft wood. Its color is brownish, yellow, and derived from magnesium and iron oxides. (5) Sardonyx. (6) Plasma, which is a semi-transparent grass-green color with yellow and white spots. Its color is due to the chlorite mineral. (7) Furthermore, agate is classified in another way: all bright and fine eastern varieties versus lower-grade western agates. Persian books list the following types of agate: 1. Red and liver-colored, where the inner color is redder than the outer. 2. Clear and transparent, possessing mirror-like reflective power. 3. Saqaq, which is not very transparent and lacks mirror-like reflective power. 4. Ablaqa, which is partly white and partly black. 5. Zobl-qati or Jawza, which has mica-like layers. 6. Shajari, which resembles a tree or a mountain in shape. 7. Baba Geri or Sulaimani, which features circular markings. In Egypt, green agate is called antas, black agate is called sulaimani, and khaki-colored agate is called gori. Because agate is found in abundance in Yemen, its finest colored varieties are called Yemeni agate.
Nature
Description
(1) The shape of agate is quite hexagonal or parallelogram-like. The shape of agate is not uniformly cast or fixed. Mostly, its shape resembles round pebbles. (2) Crystalline luster. (3) The color is brown, yellow, white, red, and black. The color bands of agate are either parallel to one another or are all concentric circles. Alternatively, its colors appear like spots and patches. (4) Hardness is of degree 7. (5) Fine transparent layers are shiny/lustrous. (6) Specific gravity is 2.65. (7) Double refraction power. (8) Electrical power is generated by rubbing. (9) Different researchers have different opinions regarding its chemical compounds. Its main component is silica, approximately 99 parts, and 1 part is red iron oxide, to which its color is due. Some are of the opinion that it also contains a slight amount of magnesium oxide.
