**Yemeni Opal / Milk Opal (Yemeni Doodhiya Pathar)**
Description
This gemstone is very precious and ancient. Physicians and scholars of ancient times have written their respective accounts regarding it. Thus, Nicols writes: "The luster of this gem is like a carbuncle, its fine saffron hue resembles amethyst, and in its yellow shades it matches emerald." Boetius writes that this gem surpasses all other gemstones in beauty of color. Pliny states: "This gem is superior to all gemstones in magnificence and splendor," and so forth.
In ancient times, this gemstone was considered a source of honor and high status. Until the Middle Ages, people held similar views regarding it. Prior to the beginning of the 17th century, this gem was highly valued. Sir Walter Scott later generated the notion of its magical properties in people's minds.
There are several varieties of this gemstone, a few of which are described below:
- Black Opal: This variety is more precious than other types of opals. Its color is exceptionally fine. Baron Goldschmidt, owner of Hungarian mines, sent several specimens of this variety from his mine, the value of which only experts could assess. One specimen of this type was the size of a hen's egg and was sold for a very high price. Today, this variety is extremely rare; some researchers believe that chemically, its formation is not ideal.
- Precious/Noble Opal
- Fire Opal: Bright red flashes of brilliance emit from within it. It is found in Hungary and Cornwall.
- Common Opal or Semi-Opal: It possesses a fine milky color and can be scratched with glass.
- Hydrophane: Opaque/translucent with fine color.
- Cacholong: Since it comes from the Cache River (located at 12° N-W in Africa) in Bucharia, it is named Cacholong. It resembles chalcedony.
- Hyalite or Miller's Glass (Glass-cutter's Glass) or Fiorite: Glass-like luster and transparent.
- Menilite: Named after Mount Menil where it is found. Color is brown.
- Wood Opal: Earthy brown and black in color with a wooden structure. It acquires a wooden appearance due to hydrated silica.
- Opal Jasper: Resembles jasper.
- Siliceous Sinter: Found in the vicinity of volcanoes and hot springs.
- Biotite / Matrix Opal: The mineral form of opal along with the host stone from which it is extracted.
