Agate / Onyx / Sulemani Stone

This is a well-known gemstone and belongs to the agate family of minerals. References in ancient Greek and Persian books indicate that prior to the Common Era, this gemstone was counted among high-quality gems. Because the shape of this gemstone closely resembles a human fingernail, it is called Onyx in the Greek language, which means fingernail. Various scholars and physicians have written various accounts regarding this gemstone. Thus, Boetius writes that the Onyx of Arabia is black in color with white bands or layers. Aaron Pick writes that in the Holy Scriptures this gemstone is named Shoham, but the aforementioned author writes its name as Carbuncle in his own works. In Greek texts, its origin is described as: the angel of love (i.e., Cupid) gave rise to Onyx. In ancient times, this gemstone was considered a cure for epilepsy and strife/quarrels, and people believed that an imprisoned jinn/demon resided within it, which would awaken at night and cause distress to the wearer. Onyx is of two kinds: one is common, and the second is Oriental. Oriental Onyx is very precious. Its color is reddish-brown or olive. Its layers are white or brown, which makes it look extremely attractive. Since this gemstone was extracted from Sardis located in Lydia, and from Sardis meaning Sardinia, it is called Sardonyx, meaning the Onyx of Sardinia. Alternatively, Sardonyx is considered a compound of Sard and Onyx. It is also related that the precious ring cast into the sea by Polycrates, the ruler of Samos, gave rise to Sardonyx. There is another variety of Onyx called Nicolo or Onicolo. It has bluish bands over a deep blue base. The properties and physical nature of Onyx are similar to agate. The only difference is that its base color tends toward blackish or brownish, and it has layers of white, green, brown, and dark tones.

This gemstone is found alongside porphyry in several places. Oriental Onyx is obtained from India, Egypt, Arabia, and Armenia, while specimens of the common variety are found in Saxony, the Isle of Skye, and several locations in Russia, Ireland, and Bohemia.

(1) The crystal form of topaz is a right-angled parallelogram and rectangular prism. (2) Its hardness ranges from 8 to 9. Therefore, it can cut quartz/crystal and is cut by diamond and sapphire. (3) Its luster is vitreous (glassy). (4) Its color includes yellow, white, orange-cinnamon, bluish, pink, onion-skin, yellowish-white, greenish-white, mountain green, sky blue, crimson, flesh red, etc. Yellow topaz is extremely fine and attractive. The deeper this color is, the higher its value. Regarding the pink shade, these are its designations: (1) Pink topaz: This is produced from yellow topaz by placing deep yellow topaz into a hookah bowl or a small crucible, covering it with ash or sand, and subsequently applying mild heat, which turns its color from yellow to pink. If the color turns out fine, its value increases. It is also called Brazilian topaz. (2) Red topaz: Topaz of this color is rare/prized. Crimson shades are often seen. (3) Bluish topaz: This is a fine, pleasing color and is not particularly rare. Pale-colored aquamarines are sometimes purchased in its place. (4) White: Also called Minas Novas. It is set into armlets, necklaces, and other ornaments. (5) Specific gravity: 3.2. (6) Transparent and lustrous. (7) Reflective power / Refractive index. (8) Electricity is generated through friction and heat. The electric property of Brazilian topaz was first discovered in 1760 by a person named Canton. Abbé Haüy observed this same property in Siberian topaz, noting that this electrical charge can persist in topaz for 20 to 24 hours. Sir David Brewster observed a strange phenomenon while cutting a topaz that had several cavities containing an extremely expansive liquid substance. His purpose was to make an incision on a cavity, open it, and examine its liquid matter. Upon opening the cavity, two rapidly expanding fluids began flowing over the polished facet, gradually expanding and contracting. Sometimes they would contract into a droplet, and at other times expand and widen. This movement continued until they vaporized completely. There is no doubt that this movement was due to the electrical charge generated by the cutting. (9) Its composition consists of 58.38 parts alumina, 34.01 parts silica, and 7.61 parts fluorine. (10) If placed on charcoal and heated using a blowpipe, it does not melt. However, if heated with borax, it turns into a colorless glass-like state. If subjected to intense heat, bubbles appear on it, which immediately burst. Yellow topazes become colorless with heat. Dark yellow ones turn pink or a Hessonite-like red. With cobalt nitrate solution/acid, it turns blue.

There are several opals that are world-renowned due to their exquisite color and size. A few of them are presented for the esteemed readers: (1) At the 1851 Exhibition, a Hungarian opal weighing 526-1/2 carats and valued at 10,000 rupees was displayed. (2) In 1866, two exceptionally fine spherical-shaped opals were extracted from a Hungarian mine. One weighed 186 carats, and the other weighed 160 carats. (3) Pliny writes regarding one specimen that this gem, the size of an areca nut and valued at 200,000 rupees, was owned by Senator Nonius. A man named Mark Antony demanded this gemstone, but Nonius refused to give it to him and fled with it. (4) Among the crown jewels, there is a specimen weighing 17 ounces, roughly the size of a fist. (5) The finest opal nowadays is the one owned by Empress Josephine, which is famous by the name Burning of Troy due to its radiant play of colors. (6) On one opal, the bust of Emperor Louis XIII is engraved. (7) An opal bears the portrait of Juba; this belongs to the gem collection of the Duke of Orleans. (8) There are several gems in the Hope Collection of jewels; one is 11 inches in length and 12/4 in width, highly transparent and pleasing in color. It features an engraving of the head of Apollo, surrounded by a halo of fiery rays.
