Its greatest virtue is that its internal and external colors are uniform, and no foil backing is required to brighten its color. This is a very ancient jewel. In English, it is called turquoise because it comes from the land of the Turks, that is, the Levant or Anatolia. It is also called callaite, agaphite, and johnite. There are two varieties of turquoise as follows: (1) Eastern Turquoise: Its color remains permanent and it is extracted from old rocks. It is composed of 30.9 parts phosphoric acid, 44.5 parts alumina, 3.75 parts iron oxide, 1.8 parts water, and 19 parts other components. (2) Western Turquoise: It is also called bone turquoise (odontolite). Its color deteriorates into green, and it is considered a product of newer rock strata. A major constituent in it is bone material, namely calcium phosphate. Accordingly, it is composed of 80 parts calcium phosphate, 8 parts carbonate of lime, 2 parts iron phosphate and magnesium phosphate, 1.5 parts alumina, and 1.6 parts water. This variety is found in Salémont adjacent to Languedoc. The physicians of Persia describe its varieties as: (1) Fathi, (2) Izhari, (3) Sulaimani, (4) Wardli, (5) Asman-goon, (6) Abdul-Hamidi, (7) Andishi, (8) Ganjvina. The first varieties are earth-colored. The remaining three are found in the mountains of Nishapur. Those pieces that are found in Kerman and Shiraz have white color mixed in them, and they are called Shabangi and Sarboom. Those which have blue veins are called Niloom.

The mineral form of sapphire is a hexagonal prism or hexagon. For this reason, it is counted in the dichroic group. Its hardness is 9 on the scale. Therefore, it can cut blue to purplish-blue stones. White and purple sapphires also exist. In Hindu texts, several other varieties of sapphire are described in addition to these; accordingly, it is written that although the true color of sapphire is blue, causing these sapphires to resemble a lotus flower, a sword, a bumblebee, sea water, or the throat of a cuckoo bird in their bluish hues. Based on their colors, there are four classes: (1) Brahmin sapphire (bluish-white), (2) Kshatriya sapphire (bluish-red), (3) Vaishya sapphire (bluish-yellow), (4) Shudra sapphire (bluish-black). The specific gravity of sapphire is from 3.9 to 4.2. The chemical composition, refractive power, and other properties of sapphire resemble those of ruby. The only difference between sapphire and ruby is color alone. That is, the color of sapphire is celestial blue, and the color of ruby is red. The color of sapphire is due to the composition of chromium (a famous element). Under the intensity of heat, white and yellowish sapphires turn white, but the color of Eastern sapphire remains the same under gaslight. However, the color of lower-grade specimens turns dark like the color of amethyst.
